ENRICHMENT EXTRAS

The purpose of the extra enrichment programs, funded by Saint John School Council, is to enhance and complement the curriculum at every grade level. Our goal is to expose students to the theater, symphony, museums, local history, and more. We work closely with the teachers to design just the right program and we spend many hours previewing and screening potential offerings. We also make sure the programs are spread out throughout the year and that each grade gets just what they need.

This year we are excited to offer the students a wide variety of programs such as: Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary, Curious Creatures , Bubble Trouble , Simple Machines , Honey Pot Hill Orchards , Wheelock Family Theatre , Museum of Science - Dig into Dinosaurs, Museum of Science – Starlab, Franklin Park Zoo , Plimoth Plantation, High Touch High Tech Science Made Fun! , Walking the Freedom Trail, JFK Library, Tsongas Industrial History Center, The National Archives & Records , Museum of Science Pompeii Exhibit and a film Greece: Secrets of the Past. Christmas Assembly, Catholic Schools Week, Author Visits

Religious Traditions

Saint John School follows Saint Julie’s path to spirituality. Saint Julie Billiart, founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame, developed a path to spirituality accessible to all, especially children. Her way exhorts everyone to find God’s presence everywhere and to remember that God is so very good. Through the image of the sunflower, Saint Julie taught, simply but profoundly, how to approach the Creator. Saint John School continues to teach the students about God in this way, a way that even the youngest student can understand.

Daily Prayer

Daily, the students begin their school day with morning prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary and Prayer to Saint Julie). Also, students say a prayer of grace before every snack time and lunch.

Liturgy

On the first Friday of each month, students attend a liturgy. Each month a different grade hosts the liturgy. Students from that grade are greeters, lectors, gift bearers and at times, altar servers.

Sacraments

Importantly, Saint John School prepares Second Grade students for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. Each spring, the second grade students receive these sacraments in beautiful liturgies at St. John the Evangelist Church.

Service

Service is an integral part of the school. Students participate in annual food and clothing drives for the poor, and they make many contributions to the missions. Service also encompasses how students treat their peers and teachers. Respect and kindness are fostered, acknowledged and praised.

Religion

With a solid foundation of Catholic values and ethics, Saint John School helps students become thoughtful, self-disciplined individuals with respect for themselves and others. Music

Each class participates in music once a week. The curriculum features seasonal and spiritual songs. The children also learn to read music, sing and perform.

Library

Each class has a scheduled class in the library. The student views, listens to, reads and understands written work. Each student is allowed to borrow a book from the library at the end of each class.

Physical Education

Saint John contracts with a private company to provide a professional physical education instructor to conduct gym classes for all students. The program develops gross motor skills, fitness, team participation, and sportsmanship. Students are encouraged to participate in games and activities in a safe environment. The purposes and objectives of the physical education program at Saint John School reflects the mission statement by exposing the student to activities and competitions which develop respect for teammates and competitors, a sense of fair play, and good sportsmanship based on Catholic values.
