Enrichment Programs

ENRICHMENT EXTRAS

The purpose of the extra enrichment programs, funded by Saint John School Council, is to enhance and complement the curriculum at every grade level. Our goal is to expose students to the theater, symphony, museums, local history, and more. We work closely with the teachers to design just the right program and we spend many hours previewing and screening potential offerings. We also make sure the programs are spread out throughout the year and that each grade gets just what they need.

This year we are excited to offer the students a wide variety of programs such as: Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary, Curious Creatures , Bubble TroubleĀ , Simple MachinesĀ , Honey Pot Hill Orchards , Wheelock Family Theatre , Museum of Science - Dig into Dinosaurs, Museum of Science - Starlab, Franklin Park Zoo , Plimoth Plantation, High Touch High Tech Science Made Fun! , Walking the Freedom Trail, JFK Library, Tsongas Industrial History Center, The National Archives & Records , Museum of Science Pompeii Exhibit and a film Greece: Secrets of the Past. Religion

With a solid foundation of Catholic values and ethics, Saint John School helps students become thoughtful, self-disciplined individuals with respect for themselves and others. Religion is an essential element to the Saint John curriculum and a full explanation of the religious curriculum is explained in the links to the grade level curriculum

Music

Each class participates in music once a week. The curriculum features seasonal and spiritual songs. The children also learn to read music, sing and perform.

Library

Each class has a scheduled class in the library. The student views, listens to, reads and understands written work. Each student is allowed to borrow a book from the library at the end of each class.

Physical Education

Saint John contracts with a private company to provide a professional physical education instructor to conduct gym classes for all students. The program develops gross motor skills, fitness, team participation, and sportsmanship. Students are encouraged to participate in games and activities in a safe environment. The purposes and objectives of the physical education program at Saint John School reflects the mission statement by exposing the student to activities and competitions which develop respect for teammates and competitors, a sense of fair play, and good sportsmanship based on Catholic values.

Arts

The students of Saint John participate in art class once a week. The children learn to be creative and imaginative using a variety of materials. Each spring there is an Art Open House where students display their artistic accomplishments from the year. There are also many opportunities for public speaking and performing. Each month there are assemblies, where students are encouraged to participate in many different roles. Throughout the year, each class also hosts the first Friday Mass where they can sing, act and recite.

Technology

Opportunities for students at Saint John School to use technology have grown immensely in the last few years. There are 16 desktop computers in the computer lab which students use during class once a week. There they learn skills using Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Power Point. Internet Safety is also a key component of the class. The school has six Polyvision Interactive White Board Systems that were donated - four are installed in classrooms (grade 2, grade 3, grade 5 and grade 6 classrooms), the other two are portable. One portable one is in grade 4 and can be moved into the Science Lab when needed, while the other one is on the first floor and is shared between the other classrooms. Most of the classrooms have a computer for the teacher and two computers that have been set up for the students to use. The science lab has four computers and two iMacs for the students to use. As teachers incorporate technology into their curriculum, more and more are using the classroom computers and bringing their students into the labs to work on class projects.
